A series illustrating the development of lithium mining in the Lithium Triangle between Bolivia, Argentina and Chile. Lithium is often viewed as a 'green' solution to climate change for its use in electric car batteries, as well as in electronics. However, its extraction from salt deserts - or 'salars' - such as those found in the Altiplano requires enormous amounts of groundwater, increasing water scarcity and pollution. With Latin America making up two thirds of global lithium reserves, this process poses an increasing threat to the local populations and the endemic, unique biosphere of the Altiplano.
